In 1944, as the hazards of sun overexposure became apparent to soldiers stationed in the Pacific tropics at the height of World War II, Benjamin Green, an airman and later a pharmacist produced Red Vet Pet (for red veterinary petrolatum) for the US military. Įarly adopters of sunscreen were the US military. In 1936, L'Oreal released its first sunscreen product, formulated by French chemist Eugène Schueller. Its protection was verified by the University of Adelaide. Milton Blake, in 1932 formulating with the UV filter 'salol' (Phenyl salicylate) at a concentration of 10%. Followed by the first sunscreen, invented in Australia by chemist H.A. The first ultraviolet B filters were produced in 1928. In Madagascar, a ground wood paste called masonjoany has been worn for sun protection, as well as decoration and insect repellent, since the 18th century, and is ubiquitous in the Northwest coastal regions of the island to this day. In Myanmar, thanaka, a yellow-white cosmetic paste made of ground bark, is traditionally used for sun protection. It is used most commonly by women to protect the face and exposed skin areas from the harsh tropical sun at sea. Among the nomadic sea-going Sama-Bajau people of the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, a common type of sun protection is a paste called borak or burak, which was made from water weeds, rice and spices. Zinc oxide paste has also been popular for skin protection for thousands of years. For example, ancient Greeks used olive oil for this purpose, and ancient Egyptians used extracts of rice, jasmine, and lupine plants whose products are still used in skin care today. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as currently there is insufficient data to support recognizing petrochemical uv filters as safe. Īs of 2021, only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) by the U.S. To effectively protect against all the potential damages of UV light, the use of broad-spectrum sunscreens (covering both UVA and UVB radiation) has been recommended. The routine use of sunscreens may also reduce the risk of melanoma. Medical organizations such as the American Cancer Society recommend the use of sunscreen because it aids in the prevention of squamous cell carcinomas. Some chemical ingredients have also been heavily scrutinised for their toxicity and have thus been banned in places such as Hawaii and Thailand for their impact on aquatic life and the environment. Chemical sunscreen ingredients also mainly work by absorbing the UV rays. Chemical sunscreens (also referred to as petrochemical sunscreens), use active ingredients that are typically derived from petroleum (e.g.Mineral sunscreens mainly work by absorbing UV rays. Mineral sunscreens (also referred to as physical), use active ingredients that are minerals ( zinc oxide and titanium dioxide).Sunscreens are regulated in terms of containing an active ingredient that is of mineral or chemical origin: Sunscreens are common supplements to clothing, particularly sunglasses, sunhats and special sun protective clothing, and other forms of photoprotection (such as umbrellas). Sunscreens come as lotions, sprays, gels, foams (such as an expanded foam lotion or whipped lotion ), sticks, powders and other topical products. Sunscreen, also known as sunblock or sun cream, is a photoprotective topical product for the skin that helps protect against sunburn and most importantly prevent skin cancer.

His last known words, which were to Six, were "Tell them to make it count." As Six drifted away from the ship, Jorge activated the bomb, opening a slipspace rupture that enveloped the Corvette and a large portion of the Supercarrier's midsection, sending it into the slipstream with no way out. Jorge resolved that he would stay to activate the slipspace device himself and presuming that doing so would cost him his life, he entrusted Noble Six with his dog tags before forcing Six off the Covenant Corvette. He also found that the timing device that would have been used to activate the SFTE was also damaged, and the only alternative would be to trigger it manually. After they had taken control of the Corvette, Jorge discovered that they were not only cut off from their Sabres, the thrusters on the Pelican were damaged during the firefight, and that in order for them to return to Reach, the SPARTANS would have to free-fall back to the planet's surface. Jorge and Six then used the hijacked Corvette, which was on course toward the supercarrier to refuel, to transport the slipspace device within range of the Supercarrier. The Savannah diverted the Corvette's fire, allowing Noble Six to infiltrate the ship's hull and allow a Pelican carrying Jorge and the bomb inside the ship. Īfter rendezvousing with the UNSC fleet, the Sabres helped in repelling the Covenant invasion force and escorted the UNSC Savannah in commandeering a Covenant corvette. Jorge and Noble Six boarded a Sabre and launched into space to join the Epsilon Eridani Defense Fleet. After receiving authorization from Colonel Urban Holland, the team traveled to a besieged base and assisted the UNSC forces in repelling the Covenant forces. Realizing the presence of the Covenant supercarrier after the Battle of Viery as a great threat, the team devised Operation: UPPERCUT a tactic which involved using a YSS-1000 "Sabre"-class starfighter to deliver a makeshift slipspace bomb to the supercarrier and destroy it via a slipspace rupture. During the preliminary stages of the Covenant invasion of Reach, Jorge and Noble Team partook in multiple operations against Covenant forces on the surface of Reach, including a counter-offensive operation to retake Sword Base and a large-scale UNSC assault on a Covenant-occupied site and neutralization of a Covenant Spire. Prior to the Fall of Reach, Jorge-052 along with other members of Noble Team investigated an incident over at Visegrád Relay, only to discover that Covenant forces had bypassed Reach's defenses and infiltrated key installations and communications centers. He acted in the capacity of heavy weapons specialist, and was the only SPARTAN-II on the team. Jorge served with Noble Team under the call sign "Noble Five" during the Fall of Reach in 2552. There are four basic modes of block prediction: horizontal, vertical, DC (one color), and TrueMotion. Each block is predicted on the values from the three blocks above it and from one block to the left of it (block decoding is done in raster-scan order: left to right and top to bottom). The side length of WebP images is limited to 16 383 pixels. Without further content, the mandatory RIFF container has an overhead of only twenty bytes, though it can also hold additional metadata. As such, it is a block-based transformation scheme with eight bits of color depth and a luminance–chrominance model with chroma subsampling by a ratio of 1:2 ( YCbCr 4:2:0). WebP's lossy compression algorithm is based on the intra-frame coding of the VP8 video format and the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) as a container format. Īs of November 2021, web browsers that support WebP had 96% market share. The supporting libwebp library reached version 1.0 in April 2018. In September 2020, WebP support was added in Safari version 14. In July 2016, Apple added WebP support to early beta versions of macOS Sierra and iOS 10, but support was later removed in the GM seed versions of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra released in September 2016. According to Google's measurements in November 2011, a conversion from PNG to WebP resulted in a 45% reduction in file size when starting with PNGs found on the web, and a 28% reduction compared to PNGs that are recompressed with pngcrush and PNGOUT. On 18 November 2011, Google announced a new lossless compression mode, and support for transparency ( alpha channel) in both lossless and lossy modes support was enabled by default in libwebp 0.2.0 (16 August 2012). Older animated GIF files can be converted to animated WebP. Tiling support was never finalized and was removed from the spec again. On 3 October 2011, Google added an "Extended File Format" allowing WebP support for animation, ICC profile, XMP and Exif metadata, and tiling (compositing very large images from maximum 16383×16383 tiles). WebP-related software is released under a BSD free software license. As a derivative of the VP8 video format, it is a sister project to the WebM multimedia container format. It was based on technology which Google had acquired with the purchase of On2 Technologies. WebP was first announced by Google on 30 September in 2010 as a new open format for lossy compressed true-color graphics on the web, producing files that were smaller than JPEG files for comparable image quality. Google announced the WebP format in September 2010, and released the first stable version of its supporting library in April 2018. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as animation and alpha transparency. WebP is a raster graphics file format developed by Google intended as a replacement for JPEG, PNG, and GIF file formats. Once the Beretta 92 fires and the trigger is reset, the finger shifts to a straight-to-the-rear single-action compression. It is interesting that most shooters do not realize how much slower this is and how much effort is expended until you fire the 92 beside DAO handguns. With the Beretta 92 and its double-action first-shot trigger, rather than coming to the rear, the trigger finger swings down and rearward to press the trigger. The SIG, however, had less take up, and it put up a “wall” we had to master. The cadences of fire were similar with each DAO handgun. Reset is rapid as the trigger finger moves forward. The double-action-only (DAO) pistols require the trigger be pressed to the rear smoothly until the sear breaks. In testing these handguns, certain adjustments must be made gun to gun. One of the raters in this project has extensive experience in industry, including quality control and inspection.Īs shooters learn in NRA basic handgun instruction, the grip, trigger press, follow through, sight alignment, and sight picture are important. Raters also must also be able to discern quality and be able to examine a mechanism for smoothness, leverage, tool marks, and function. This is a skill covered in the NRA basic pistol course 101. The rater must also be able to fire accurately from a solid benchrest. To test firearms, the shooter must be able to execute a draw from a concealed-carry holster, get on target, and fire quickly and accurately. Their mix of training, police and military, is unified by NRA training. Another rater is a military officer with extensive experience in the Middle East and Kosovo and has trained soldiers on the handgun. He was won several competitions and actively trains. Our senior rater on this project was a peace officer for more than 20 years and is both an NRA and state-certified instructor. Of course, the novice is closely supervised. Gun Tests relies on raters who carry and use firearms on a daily basis, but occasionally we draft a novice with no preconceived notions to see how a pistol may be received by those with less experience. Those who have not tested the pistols extensively and who have not taken time to compare features may feel these pistols are cut from the same cloth, but by assuming that, those shooters abrogate a lot of responsibility in choosing the handgun that suits them best. Beretta, CZ, HK, SIG, Smith & Wesson, and Glock offer different features and different fits and feel for their products. If we’re looking at them as home-defense guns, then size is less of an issue.Īs we collected data and choose firearms for inclusion in these shoot-outs, we met old-line shooters and even young shooters who feel that the polymer-frame striker-fired market is crowded, and these handguns are much the same. The Beretta won’t carry as easily as the APX and Glock, but it’s comparable to the P320-M17 in size. To add some historical texture, we also shot these firearms side by side with a full-size Beretta 92, or the M9 in its military appellation. We elected to test these three striker-fired polymer handguns head to head to determine which might be the best choice for concealed carry and personal defense for civilians. A third handgun, Beretta’s APX, was also not adopted, and like the M17, is a modular design. The new Glock 45 is a direct result of Glock’s experience in the military trials and also a result of criticism of the 19X. While not chosen by the military, the full-size-grip short-slide Glock has enjoyed commercial success. The Glock 19X was also a participant in the military trials. Army tested several handguns and chose the SIG P320, which is designated as the M17 in military service. What I mean is that while the second season is rich in content, it still leaves some gaps to fill. Don’t believe me? Just ask Tenya.Īs I watched more and more of season 2, I can’t help but realize that the sequel serves as a way to prepare for the characters/heroes for what’s really ahead. It motivates other heroes to realize what they are and what to fight for. Season 2 has psychology that makes antagonists such as Stain feel meaningful as a character. In his mind, there are certain rules that establishes what a “true hero” is from the “fake ones”. Again, his character ties with the question of “what makes a hero”. Perhaps the most prominent of these is Hero Killer Stain, a new villain with his own objectives and morals. Meanwhile, the show still maintains its presence of antagonists. It invites moments of sympathy as we see how tragic his past has influenced his character in the present. The Sports Festival arc also examines the background story of Todoroki, a character that we knew little about from the previous season. At least for these characters, being a hero is more than just about saving others. While some of their principles can be disputed, they sent a clear message that becoming a hero is no easy path. Prominent characters such as Deku, Ochako, Bakugo, and Todoroki gives the audience their insight on their reasoning for fighting. While this may seem like a generic battle tournament you can find in many shounen series, Boku Hero no Academia sets itself to establish characters within its tournament. It’s a typical shounen series yet is able to spread its themes and knows how to do so. Something that I often found appealing about Boku Hero no Academia is how stylish it establishes itself. Protagonist Izuku Midoriya (nicknamed Deku) tries to make a difference in his world by trying to become a hero. At its core, the show is about heroes in a fictional world. Still, the sequel does a splendid job at crafting the essence of its story. Expecting this show to hit a lot of its marks is no easy task and I had some doubts at first. As an avid fan of the manga, I’m also rather impressed by the faithfulness of its adaptation standards. Therefore, expect almost twice as much as details. episodes (including an anime original) as part of its storytelling. One major part of the sequel is that the length is almost twice the duration of the first season. Season 2 is here and it’s set to fill the gaps for you diehard fans of this classic shounen adventure. However, it missed the opportunity to expand more and build on those elements. It adapted the general premise of the story and had its character roster in set. The first season consisted of only 13 episodes. After watching the first season of Boku Hero no Academia (My Hero Academia), I can’t help but feel wanting for more of this series. Herba said this on Decemat 8:25 am | Reply Yes, RAs German sounded really good in this episode and thankfully there wasn’t that much ‘Hans’ in it because the pronunciation really started to irritate me. Thomas Shaw is dead.”ģ0 Responses to “Berlin Station, episode 8, first impressions ” Polygraph expert asks if he is Thomas Shaw. Question I didn’t understand: “Did Thomas Shaw know that colander was an agent?” Hector reveals that he knew Houjin Lin was in Berlin. Polygraph expert says Thomas Shaw knows what the agency has done. Lots of talking around the fact that he interrogated Julian de Vos and Hector’s possible anger at the CIA or fear of it or feeling it should face consequences. Patricia gets in the car with Julian de Vos and lets herself be pleased by the fact that their destination is a secret.Īt the interrogation, Hector describes his ironic descent into the darkness. He spouts a bunch of stuff about identity and people having two sides. Outside her apartment - sending the messages - is Julian de Vos.Īt the interrogation, Hector is now mostly overtaken by the drugs and seeing double. In her bathroom, Patricia gets a text message informing her that she will be picked by a driver - she asks what kind of wine to bring. She asks him if he’s done and then asks him to get the fuck out of her office. He tells her he is doing what is in the interest of the office, the CIA, and her. He says it’s not a threat she says it’s unethical and he wants to keep her in line. A glowering presence.Īt the embassy, Robert drops the Antoinette file on Valerie’s desk. Hector admits that Claire was still alive when he arrived in Wedding, that he saw her die, that he saw Ruth Iosava there, that Ruth was murdered, that he killed Ruth and that he did so by breaking her neck - as Daniel and Steven watch. He’s still really angry - apparently more because she didn’t tell him the truth when he asked her directly in episode 2. Then she says that she closed her report early, because she didn’t want to lie to him, but the guy she was investigating in his bar funded Charlie Hebdo. Then she says “this is really hard on me, too” and he isn’t having it. This is possibly the most honest writing of the episode - as he asks her if she fell in love with him before or after she first said she had, and she can’t really answer. They sit down and she tells him the night they met she was working a terror plot. Valerie walks into a bar and meets her significant other, Benjamin, so apparently it’s his bar. Next, Robert and Golda meet in a tea shop.īeautiful shot of Daniel reacting to Hector. At the latest now it must be obvious that these interrogation scenes are not happening in real time. Shirley Pimple walks up to him, concerned. She says she’s “read into it.” He says she isn’t.Ĭut to Hector in a bar, doing shots of Russian Standard. She asks him about “enhanced interrogation techniques,” i.e., did he learn to torture in North Africa. He says they wouldn’t be having this conversation if Claire were still alive. Hans meets Steven, who isn’t turning himself in - he offers to give the Germans Thomas Shaw in exchange for leaving Germany free and clear. Also I can’t imagine you’d ever find it this empty. However, this neato building is really about a century old and precedes that neighborhood’s Turkish immigration. It’s nowhere near the Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung, but Neukölln is a place that you might expect to find a hamam. I have a strong suspicion that we’re actually in the sauna Stadtbad Neukölln here. I was never convinced that Hector acting alone was Thomas Shaw, so I feel like he needs an accomplice and I am wondering whether it is Steven, even though I can’t think of a motive. Nothing here about Iosava, nothing about Panama - this show has too many plotlines and there are only two hours of it left. And, as I realized, I’m not that curious anymore about who Thomas Shaw could be, because I don’t as yet see any true moral conflict built up around the issue of whistleblowing. It’s very hard for me to imagine what would let me develop any sympathy for that character at all by the end of the series - because I am just not interested in his plotline. This episode gave me a little bit more convincing information about why Armitage might have wanted the Hector role, but I can’t say I’m hugely disappointed that he didn’t get it. One might conclude after watching it that they’ve just decided to let Richard Armitage emote in front of the camera rather than saying anything. However, there’s a nice intimate scene in this episode. TL DR summary - I’ve a bit lost interest in anything to do with Hector or Steven. LinkedIn then quietly pulled the Groups app in February this year, as it announced plans to integrate the feature. “Everything from the news feed to notifications to search, these things move at a fast pace, and the minute the apps got separated the main app innovated at a much faster pace and became more advanced than the standalone Groups app.” “Being a standalone app, Groups was not able to take advantage of the overall LinkedIn ecosystem,” Pattnaik said. And LinkedIn itself, it seems, was finding it a challenge to continue updating the app, even as LinkedIn itself was getting enhanced with new features. In the wake of the changes, reports started to surface about how the moves stifled usage of groups, turning the platform into what some were calling a ghost town. And on the part of LinkedIn, it would help the company focus on developing features specifically tailored to the Groups experience.īut the move did not go down well. The bigger idea was that, with some 2 million Groups already on LinkedIn, users would be able to dedicate more time to posting, reading and managing (if they were admins) those groups, and creating new groups, once they were in their own app. Included in the changes, Groups were made private with the aim of reducing some of the spam that people were posting. In 2015, the company hived off an updated version of Groups into its own standalone app. The moves come nearly three years after LinkedIn tried another approach to put some more wind into Groups’ sails. The company is relaunching Groups by rolling it into its main app by the end of the month after quietly pulling the standalone app earlier this year, and it will be streamlining the service by cutting out several features, including an ability for Group administrators to pre-moderate comments and a way to email send Group posts as emails to the whole group, while also adding in new features like threaded replies and the ability to post video and other media.Īn announcement detailing the changes was sent out to a select Groups power users earlier today, and we have confirmed the details with LinkedIn directly. Mitali Pattnaik, the product manager for Groups, said that some of the discontinuations - such as the ability to approve posts before they are live - are temporary and will make their way back to the app in some form over time.
